A new legislative proposal targeting the Polisario Front has been introduced in the US Congress.
Two US representatives, Republican Ronny Jackson and Democrat Josh Gottheimer, presented the bill calling on the Secretary of State to consider designating the Polisario Front as a foreign terrorist organisation.
This bipartisan initiative follows several previous efforts in the US Congress on this issue, according to Moroccan media reports.
“This bill ensures that the Trump administration has the necessary tools to investigate the Polisario Front and take decisive action to counter the threats to the national security of the United States and its allies. We must mobilize all resources to combat terrorism, dismantle the networks that support it, and protect the American people,” Representative Rory Jackson said.
In a statement released during the bill’s presentation to Congress, Ronny Jackson asserted that “for far too long,” Iran and its proxies, particularly Hezbollah, have been exploiting the Polisario Front to fuel instability in West Africa.
For his part, Josh Gottheimer emphasised that the Iranian regime is seeking to open a new front against the United States and its partners by leveraging its allied organisations.
The Democratic congressman stated that the Polisario Front has received drones, weapons, and support from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. According to him, if these findings were confirmed following the assessment stipulated in the bill, designation as a terrorist organisation would allow for the application of U.S. counterterrorism sanctions, including financial and diplomatic ones.
In 2019, the United States designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) a terrorist organisation, 22 years after doing the same for Lebanon’s Hezbollah in 1997.
This new bipartisan initiative echoes the one submitted in June 2025 by representatives Joe Wilson (Republican) and Jimmy Pannetta (Democrat), which has so far garnered 15 signatures, mostly from Republicans.
Republican Senator Ted Cruz introduced a similar proposal in the Senate to designate the Polisario Front a terrorist entity.
This proposal comes as the White House and the State Department continue to reaffirm their support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara and the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco in 2007 to resolve
the dispute over the territory.
