APA-Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) – President Ibrahim Traore handed over combat equipment to the army on Thursday.
Burkina Faso has spent around one billion dollars, or more than 600 billion CFA francs, on military equipment, revealed Economy Minister Aboubakar Nacanabo.
He was speaking on Radiodiffusion Télévision du Burkina during the ‘Tribune de la redevabilité’ programme on the night of Wednesday 5 to Thursday 6 June 2024.
According to him, the equipment acquired will enhance the operational capabilities of the national armed forces in the fight against terrorism.
On Thursday, Captain Ibrahim Traoré handed over a large consignment of military and engineering equipment to the defence and security forces engaged in the war against terrorism.
The equipment consists mainly of IED-proof armoured fighting vehicles, weapons and ammunition, and military engineering equipment including excavators, truck carriers and tankers.
For the president, this equipment is ‘effective’ in use and will reduce the capacity of armed terrorist groups to cause harm.
“We live in a world of predation, and to have peace, you have to wage war. So wage war,” instructed Traore, the commander in chief of his country’s armed forces.
Burkina Faso is continuing to rearm at a time it has been facing a security crisis for almost a decade.
