APA-Ndjamena (Chad) The price of a litre of petrol has risen from CFA518 to CFA730, representing an increase of 40.9 percent, while the price of diesel rose from CFA700 to CFA 820.
The price of petroleum products has risen again in Chad. A joint decree issued by the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Trade has increased pump prices in Ndjamena and the provinces.
The new decree sets the price of petrol at CFA730 instead of CFA518, an increase of CFA212. The price of diesel has risen from CFA700 to CFA820, an increase of 17.14 percent.
This is the first steep rise since 2010. From CFA600 per litre at the pump, the price was revised downwards in 2014 to CFA518. In 2017, there was a slight increase of CFA5.
In 2018, it rose again to CFA570, before being revised downwards in 2023 to CFA518.
Although no official reason has been given, sources in the Ministry of Finance suggest that the authorities want to harmonise prices with Cameroon to prevent smuggling.
At the beginning of February, Cameroon increased the price of petroleum products at the pump. Super has risen to CFA840 from CFA730, and diesel to CFA828 from CFA720.
Chad joined the ranks of oil-producing countries in 2003 with the opening of the Kome valves in the province of Logone Oriental. With its mini refinery, the country became energy independent of Nigeria, Sudan and Libya, which were supplying it.
Since 2023, it has been the fourth country in the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC) to readjust the prices of its petroleum products.
