The commission, established in 2021 after the passing of President Déby, aims to reduce intercommunal violence by disarming the population.
On July 19th, the commission presented its latest findings to Prime Minister Allah-Maye Halina. General Tahir Youssouf Boy, coordinator of the commission, announced the seizure of 3,094 firearms between May 2023 and July 2024.
General Boy attributes a decrease in intercommunal conflicts to the disarmament efforts. He emphasized the commission’s effectiveness and called for additional resources to further its mission.
Prime Minister Halina commended the commission’s work and urged civilians to surrender any illegal weapons they may possess. This collaborative approach is crucial for long-term peace and security in Chad.
While the disarmament program is yielding positive results, challenges likely remain. Continued efforts are necessary to collect remaining illegal firearms and prevent future stockpiling.
