The Confederation of African Football (CAF) conducted the draw for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Wednesday, which takes place in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania later this year.
It’s a draw around groups of five teams, while waiting to complete Group C.
The draw for the eighth edition of the CHAN was not postponed like this competition which is the exclusive preserve of footballers based on the continent.
It took place on Wednesday at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi, the day after the announcement of the postponement of the tournament, initially scheduled for February.
Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will co-host the tournament.
The groups of five teams are on the bill while waiting to know the two nations that will complete Group C which features Uganda, Niger and Guinea.
Defending champion Senegal, housed in Group D, the only one with four teams, will not have an easy task. The Lions will face Nigeria, who are back after missing out on the last two editions, as well as Sudan, who have one of
the best local bases in Africa, and Congo, quarter-finalists in 2018 and 2020.
Group A also features a clash between the only two nations to have won CHAN twice: DR Congo (2009 and 2016) and Morocco (2018 and 2020). It also includes Kenya, one of the hosts, as well as Angola and Zambia, all countries with strong championships at continental level.
Group B looks fairly even, comprising hosts Tanzania, Madagascar, semi-finalists of the previous edition, and three surprise teams.
These include Mauritania, who eliminated Mali to qualify, Burkina Faso, who caused a sensation by beating Côte d’Ivoire, and the Central African Republic, who secured a historic qualification by eliminating Cameroon.
Uganda, Niger and Guinea are waiting to know their two opponents who will complete Group C.
They will be known at the end of a tournament that will feature Algeria, Comoros, Egypt, Gabon, Gambia,
Malawi and South Africa, on a date to be determined by CAF.
