Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi landed in N’Djamena on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. He was greeted at the airport by his Chadian counterpart, Abderaman Koulamallah. N’Djamena is the third stop on Wang’s tour, which began on January 5 in Namibia and continued in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This marks the first visit by a senior Chinese official to Chad since the two countries formalised diplomatic ties in 2006.
During his stay, the Chinese Foreign Minister will hold talks with his Chadian counterpart and the President of Chad.
Talks are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations.
Wang Yi’s visit comes as Chad adopts a more pronounced multilateral approach, evidenced by its closer ties with Russia and Hungary and its decision to sever military ties with France.
China, a key economic and trade partner for many African nations, including Chad, has significantly expanded its footprint on the continent in recent years. Beijing’s investments have targeted infrastructure, natural resources, and technology, all while promoting its policy of non-interference.
Through this visit, China aims to bolster its influence in the region and address the development and economic integration priorities of its African partners.
