The Republic of Congo has announced ambitious plans to increase its electricity generation capacity to 1,500 megawatts by 2030, with a strong emphasis on renewable energy sources.
Congolese Minister of Energy and Water, Emile Ouosso, revealed the initiative at the Congo Energy & Investment Forum in Brazzaville on Wednesday, stating that the goal is to “improve access to electricity for the country’s six million citizens and support industrial growth.”
A key component of this strategy involves collaboration with international partners, including the World Bank and the Rockefeller Foundation, through the “Mission 300” Initiative, launched in April 2024, which aims to provide electricity access to 300 million Africans by 2030.
“With the support of international initiatives such as Mission 300, we are poised to make significant progress in electrifying our country and improving the quality of life of our citizens,” Minister Ouosso emphasized.
Congo is also focusing on its significant hydroelectric potential, estimated at 27,000 megawatts, of which only 1 percent is currently utilized. “Our most precious energy resource is water. With appropriate investments, we can unlock this potential to produce more electricity, foster industrialization, and electrify rural communities,” the minister added.
The government has identified a 4,000 megawatts hydroelectric potential in the Brazzaville region, which is expected to provide “clean and reliable energy to our population and our industries.”
In addition to hydroelectric power, Congo is diversifying its energy sources with solar and gas projects. A 50 megawatts solar farm project in the Brazzaville region is underway with AMEA Power. Furthermore, the Chinese company Wing Wah is developing a gas monetization project to produce 400 megawatts, with 200 megawatts integrated into the national grid. “If we modernize our electricity transmission infrastructure, we will be able to completely eliminate fuels,” Minister Ouosso stated.
The inaugural Congo Energy & Investment Forum, held from March 24th to 26th, 2025, under the patronage of President Denis Sassou Nguesso, brought together international investors and local stakeholders to explore opportunities in the energy and infrastructure sectors.
