More than 272,000 households in northern Mozambique remain without electricity after Tropical Cyclone Jude battered parts of the country earlier this week, according to state utility Eletricidade de Moçambique (EDM).
The cyclone made landfall on Sunday night, bringing winds exceeding 120 kilometres per hour.
The storm caused extensive damage to power infrastructure in Nampula province, the state-run utility said.
“Due to the bad weather affecting the northern region, Nampula province has suffered damage to 74 kilometres of medium and low voltage lines, as well as the collapse of six transformer stations and two high voltage towers on the line between Namialo and Monapoque,” EDM said in a statement.
The outages affected 15 districts, including the cities of Nampula, Angoche, and Nacala.
EDM estimates the damage at around 100 million meticais (US$1.6 million).
Restoration efforts have been hampered by blocked roads, but electricity has been partially restored in parts of Nampula, Nacala and the districts of Monapo, Liupo and Mongicual.
Meanwhile, the National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (INGD) reported that Cyclone Jude has claimed at least six lives, injured 20 people and affected more than 9,500 residents across Nampula, Niassa and Zambézia provinces.
Authorities continue to assess the damage as efforts to restore power and provide aid to affected communities remain underway.
