A negotiating team of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) is in South Africa where peace talks are being held with officials of the Ethiopian federal government, APA can confirm on Tuesday.
The leader of the front Debretsion Gebremichael, is not taking part in the talks according to a letter the TPLF has sent to the African Union.
Most of TPLF’s negotiators are not known as political heavyweights within the TPLF.
According to information reaching APA, the African Union-led negotiation between the TPLF and the Ethiopian government started on Tuesday.
On Monday the Ethiopian diplomats arrived in Pretoria, South Africa where the negotiation for an end to the conflict is taking place.
Demeke Mekonnen (Deputy Prime Minister), Redwan Hussien (advisor to the Prime Minister), Gedion Timotios (Minister for Justice) and Temesgen Tiruneh (Director of Ethiopia’s intelligence) are the members designated by the Ethiopian government.
However, it is unclear if all of them are in South Africa.
Vocal Ethiopians who are known for expressing their opinions on social media are increasingly questioning the relevance of sitting for a peace talks with the TPLF when the rebels are on the verge of being defeated.
