According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Boikhutso Rabasha, the government has put measures in place to control the import of horticultural produce from South Africa.
She said only horticultural produce from Cape Town will be allowed in Botswana after that place was cleared of Asian fruit fly.
Rabasha said the ministry will closely monitor the situation at Botswana’s borders with neighbouring countries to ensure that imported produce is free of Asian fruit fly.
The Asian fruit fly attacks and damages citrus, green paper, mangoes, tomatoes, avocados and bananas.
Botswana last recorded cases of Asian fruit fly in the country in 2013 in its north.
Reports indicate that South African farmers were battling to control the outbreak of Asian fruit fly which attacked them on 12 March.
