The Ghanaian government has deployed more than 37,000 police officers and soldiers around the country to enforce the partial lockdown meant to contain the spread of coronavirus.
Ghana Police Service director of public affairs Sheila Abayie Buckman said on Tuesday that some 35,000 police officers and 2,000 army personnel have been deployed to Greater Accra Region, Ashanti Region and Kasoa in the Central Region.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo announced a two-week partial lockdown commencing March 30 to combat the Coronavirus pandemic nationwide.
Among other measures, President Akufo-Addo imposed restrictions on the movement of persons in the populous Greater Accra Metropolitan Area, Kumasi Metropolitan Area and Kasoa for 14 days.
This means that everyone residing in these areas must stay at home for the next two weeks or 14 days with the exception of the media, members of parliament, electricity companies, among other key stakeholders.
Only essential movements are tolerated, such going out for food, water, medicine, banking transactions, or public toilet facilities. But, as much as possible, people are advised to stay at home.
The country has recorded 152 cases of coronavirus, with five deaths.
