Ghana’s Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta has announced on Monday that the country has secured $100 million Coronavirus fund to combat the deadly disease.
Speaking on the floor of the Parliament in Accra, the Finance Minister told the lawmakers that the money was ready for disbursement in accordance with Ghana’s public financial management procedures and regulations.
Ofori Atta noted that contrary to the skeptics that the money was not available, “I wish to assure you that the money has been secured and is available for disbursement”.
It is not clear where the money was secured to combat the pandemic, but the Minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu raised objection when the government hinted of using part of the Heritage Fund to fight the COVID-19 disease.
The Heritage Fund is a special fund set up with oil revenue saved for generations unborn and no government is allowed to withdraw part of the funds.
The Finance Minister explained that his ministry was working in collaboration with the Ministry of Health to provide all the necessary equipment meant to fight the deadly disease.
