Some Ghanaian fans and former Black Stars players have described the 0-1 score line in the Black Stars match against the ‘Les Coelacantes’ of Comoros in their second match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier as a major setback.
According to local media reports on Thursday, the momentary loss of concentration by the Black Stars was responsible for the loss as Myziane Maolida of the Comoros scored the only goal of the match in the last minutes of the first half of the game at the Omnisports Stadium in Moroni on Tuesday, November 21, 2023.
It will be recalled that the defeat is the second straight loss by the Black Stars to ‘Les Coelacantes’ of Comoros. The Black Stars had lost 2-3 at the Africa Cup of Nations last year to the Comoros in their early exit from the tournament.
With this victory, Comoros maintain its lead in Group I with 6 points from 2 matches, while Ghana with 3 points from two matches is placed 4th. ..
Mali and Madagascar have 4 and 3 points respectively from two matches to place 3rd and 4th.
It was the second straight victory by the island nation over the Black Stars following their 3-2 win at the Africa Cup of Nations last year, leading to Ghana’s early exit from the competition.
Reacting to the defeat of the Black Stars, a former player of the national squad, Abukari Damba, wondered the level of the players’ motivation under the Chief Coach, Chris Hughton.
According to the Ghanaian Times reports on Thursday, Damba told the Accra-based Citi Sports that the latest defeat of the Black Stars in the World Cup qualifiers was because some players were not committed to the cause under Chris Hughton.
“I always talk about the intrinsic motivation of these players, are these players self-motivated enough to play for the national team, these are some of the questions that we always have to ask.
“So far, it is not looking too good, but I believe we can always make it better.
“How do players feel when invited to come and play for the national team; all these are questions that need to be answered. How do they approach games?” Demba queried.
