APA-Banjul (The Gambia) A Gambian navy officer accused of masterminding an abortive coup last year has been sentenced to 12 years in prison APA can report on Wednesday.
Lance Corporal Sanna Fadera, a junior navy officer was found guilty of the treasonable offense by a high court judge on Tuesday.
Three of Federa’s seven co-accused all of them military officers were acquitted and discharged.
Other acquitted of the case are two civilians and a police officer charged with playing a role in the coup conspiracy and concealing felony.
One military officer who was named in the coup conspiracy has not been caught and is presumably still at large.
State prosecutors earlier this year charged Lance Corporal Fadera and his co-accused of an attempt to overthrow President Adama Barrow who was re-elected in December 2021 after first defeating Yahya Jammeh in 2016.
Jammeh who came to power in a military coup in 1994, had ruled Africa’s smallest mainland nation for 22 years before Barrow defeated him at the polls.
