APA-Ndjamena (Chad) Fiber optic cable cuts from Cameroon and the security situation in
Sudan are at the root causes of an internet outage in neighbouring Chad.
Getting online has been difficult since the afternoon of April 23. For nearly six hours, Internet access was cut off, this time, not by the government but because of failures originating from fiber optic cables from Cameroon
and Sudan.
It was late at around 9pm when access was restored, but not for long.
In the early morning of April 24, it was flagging again.
In a statement, SudaTchad, the Chadian-Sudanese company in charge of managing the fiber optics coming from Cameroon and Sudan, provided explanations on what is behind these frequent interruptions.
According to the company, service was interrupted in Sudan on Sunday, April 23 at 1:30 a.m., due to a problem of “non-provisioning of the station because of the security situation in Khartoum, the maintenance teams were unable to intervene.”
The other cause of the interruption is the cable cut and repeated power problems witnessed on the Cameroon side.
The situation was the focus of a meeting chaired by the Minister of Posts and Digital Economy, Mahamat Allahou Taher.
The meeting was about finding immediate and urgent solutions to the Internet blackout.
At the end of the meeting, officials from Moov Africa and Airtel Chad, two major Internet service providers, were asked to take the necessary steps to avoid possible disruption of the Internet network.
