Liberia is poised for a war crimes court after President Joseph Boakai signed an executive order to that effect, APA can report form Monrovia on Friday.
Over 200, 000 people had died in two civil wars in Liberia between 1989 and 2003.
President Boakai’s order establishes a war crimes court, which would look into the atrocities such as rape, mass murder and torture during these periods described as the darkest chapters of Liberian history.
The role of the court will be to catalogue rights violations ostensibly by all sides to the conflicts.
President Baokai said it was be a necessary process towards healing the nation through justice.
The US embassy official in Liberia Catherine Rodriguez described the move as historic as it opens the way towards accountability for civil war atrocities which have been ignored by successive government for years and promote immunity.
Although a truth commission was established in 2006 to look into the atrocities, a report recommending prosecution for perpetrators was never implemented.
