Around 87,000 candidates for irregular migration, mainly from sub-Saharan Africa, have been intercepted in 2023.
Last Wednesday, about 189 km south-west of Dakhla, a royal navy vessel intercepted a pirogue carrying 91 sub-Saharan Africans who were trying to reach the Canary Islands to migrate illegally.
They were immediately given the necessary treatment before being handed over to the Moroccan gendarmerie for the usual administrative procedures.
This operation is part of the joint efforts of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces and law enforcement agencies to combat illegal migration.
In 2023, these units managed to intercept around 87,000 potential illegal immigrants, mainly from sub-Saharan Africa. This underlines the continued importance of monitoring and preventing illegal migration movements in the region.
