Over the years, Morocco has spearheaded numerous initiatives at the UN Human Rights Council, consistently advocating for rights and civil liberties in line with its constitution.
The African Network of National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) officially appointed Amina Bouayach, president of Morocco’s National Human Rights Council (CNDH), as the head of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) today.
The announcement was made during the NANHRI General Assembly at the UN headquarters in Geneva, underscoring Africa’s confidence in Bouayach’s leadership.
NANHRI had put forward her nomination in January, highlighting her experience as GANHRI’s secretary.
The network praised her as a leader who has driven critical initiatives with strategic vision while championing human rights at the highest international levels.
“She has represented the alliance with distinction and led key operations with an unwavering commitment to human rights,” NANHRI stated in its official release.
Joseph Whittal, NANHRI president and head of Ghana’s human rights institution, affirmed that the African bloc strongly backed Bouayach’s candidacy. “We voted overwhelmingly in favor of her appointment,” he said.
Gilbert Sebihogo, NANHRI’s executive director, echoed this sentiment. “She has carried Africa’s voice with integrity. We trust her to continue this work at the helm of GANHRI.”
Namizata Sangaré, president of Côte d’Ivoire’s national human rights institution, described the appointment as a natural progression. “Within NANHRI, we are confident she will serve GANHRI with excellence,” she said.
This resounding endorsement reflects Africa’s resolve to take a leading role in global human rights efforts.
NANHRI views Bouayach’s appointment as an opportunity to reinforce the alliance’s core values and amplify its voice worldwide.
Furthermore, Morocco has undertaken numerous initiatives at the United Nations Human Rights Council over the years, steadfastly defending human rights and civil liberties in accordance with its constitution.
