Mozambique’s Energy Regulatory Authority (ARENE) has announced a reduction in fuel prices by up to 17.7 percent, with the new prices taking effect from Thursday.
The cuts come as part of periodic price adjustments influenced by global market trends and exchange rate fluctuations.
The most significant reduction is in the price of kerosene, which drops from 87.05 to 69.35 meticais per litre (approximately $1.4 to $1.1 at the current exchange rate).
Kerosene is widely used by low-income households and ARENE said the price cut would help improve their purchasing power.
Diesel sees a notable price drop from 91.23 to 86.89 meticais per litre.
Given diesel’s critical role in the economy, this reduction is expected to have a broad impact on transportation and production costs.
Petrol prices, however, see only a slight decrease of 0.49 percent, falling from 86.25 to 85.82 meticais per litre, while the price of LPG cooking gas remains unchanged at 86.05 meticais per kilogramme.
ARENE said in a statement that the adjustments were due to multiple factors, including the appreciation of the US dollar in negotiations on the Brent futures market.
The currency shift contributed to a reduction in fuel demand, leading to lower prices.
