The construction of the road linking Es-Semara to the Mauritanian border via the Moroccan municipalities of Amgala and Tifariti, over a length of 93 km, is 95 percent complete.
The ambitious infrastructure project has just been launched, allowing the opening of a unique border crossing between Morocco and Mauritania. According to a press release issued by the Mauritanian authorities, this corridor, located between the Moroccan city of Smara and the locality of Bir Moghrein in Mauritania, provides for the extension of the national road RN17 over a distance of 93 kilometers.
This initiative aims to break the isolation of the Moroccan municipalities of Amgala and Tifariti, while strengthening commercial and human exchanges in this Sahelo-Saharan zone.
The project also includes the creation of a modern bus station and the establishment of a taxi line, with a view to facilitating travel between the different municipalities in the region. In addition to the logistical aspect, these measures are intended to boost local economic activity and promote better integration of the territory into national and international transport circuits.
Asked about this, the president of the municipality of Amgala, Mrs. Fatima Sayeda, emphasised the importance of this program within the framework of the Atlantic Initiative.
The latter aims to open up Sahelian countries by offering them direct access to the Atlantic Ocean through Moroccan infrastructure.
According to Mrs. Sayeda, this new opening will not only intensify relations between Morocco and Mauritania, but also consolidate ties between local populations, in a spirit of strengthened regional cooperation.
