At least twelve commanders of the radical sect Boko Haram have been killed by government troops in Nigeria’s northern state of Borno, the country’s military claimed over the weekend.
A statement by the military PRO Brigadier General Muhammad Yarima said the chief insurgents who were also affiliated to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) were on an operation when they were eliminated.
The main operation to eliminate them took place in the town of Damasak where Boko Haram had launched a revenge attack.
Brigadier General Yarima said a weapon storage depot belonging to the insurgents was discovered in the area as Nigeria fighter jets pound targets under Operation Lafita Dole.
The Nigerian military admitted that three of its soldiers and an unspecified number of civilians had died during the fighting.
The military said some local people in Damask worked as Boko Haram informants.
