More than 90 people died after an overcrowded ferry sank off the coast of Mozambique on Sunday, a senior official has said.
According to Silvério Nauaito, administrator of the Island of Mozambique, the death toll from the sunken boat rose to 94 on Monday morning following the discovery of three more bodies by rescue teams.
“We know that there were 130 on the boat and, of these, we know that 94 have already lost their lives,” Nauaito told the state-run Radio Mozambique.
He said rescue teams were continuing to search for survivors, “but it is not easy to say precisely how many have completely disappeared.”
Five have so far been rescued, according to reports.
The broadcaster said the boat, which was not unsuitable for carrying passengers, sank while travelling from Lunga in Nampula province to Mozambique Island, which is located off the coast of the province.
