APA-Rabat (Morocco) The new visit to Morocco by the head of the Spanish government comes against a backdrop of strengthened relations between Rabat and Madrid, particularly since the Kingdom of Spain’s
recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara region.
The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, will pay an official visit to Morocco on Wednesday, accompanied by his Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares.
The Spanish Executive announced Sánchez’s trip to Morocco on Tuesday, his first official visit for a year.
On 2 February 2023, Sanchez chaired the twelfth high-level meeting between the two countries in Rabat with his Moroccan counterpart, Aziz Akhennouch.
The Spanish Prime Minister’s latest visit to Morocco comes against a backdrop of strengthened relations between Rabat and Madrid, particularly since the Kingdom of Spain’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara region. Although this decision has strengthened ties between the two countries, it has nonetheless given
rise to tensions between Spain and Algeria.
Madrid’s recognition of the Moroccan status of the Sahara in March 2022 prompted Algeria to suspend its friendship treaty with Spain three months later, marking an incomprehensible diplomatic reaction.
The consequences of this decision are being felt even in the sphere of diplomatic meetings between Madrid and Algiers, as shown by the Algerian decision to cancel at the last minute the visit of the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs to Algiers, which was due to take place last week.
