The Daily Graphic and Ghanaian Times that reported the story, said that the military
had initiated investigations into circumstances leading to the explosion at the armory.
The explosion, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, was reported to
have been accompanied by flying missiles, which landed in residential areas around
the base, compelling residents to flee for their lives.
The explosion, according to the Times, has sparked the debate about the safety of
people invading the military base’s surrounding area, although the area is strictly
for military purposes.
Some military personnel had to inform residents on motorbikes to flee for safety
owing to the enormity of fire and explosions that were accompanying it with flying
missiles.
The Director of Public Relations at the Ghana Armed Forces, Lt. Col. Aggrey
Quarshie, has said the police managed to bring the fire under control and started
a probe into the cause.
He noted that the fire was detected at the small arms area and laboratory so the
personnel quickly brought it under control to avert any unfortunate incident.
There were, however, no casualties during the fire and explosions, reports the Times.
Meanwhile some of the missiles have been retrieved and returned to the BAD by
residents and their opinion leaders.
