Visiting Djiboutian minister of Foreign Affairs Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and his Rwandan counterpart Dr Vincent Biruta pledged here on Wednesday to beef up pragmatic cooperation between the two countries.
On the sidelines of the first Joint Ministerial Commission between Rwanda and Djibouti, the two delegations pledged to do more to advance trade between the two countries.
Rwanda and Djibouti enjoy strong bilateral relations. The Ambassador to Ethiopia based in Addis Ababa represents Rwanda to Djibouti and her Ambassador to Ethiopia represents Djibouti. Existing Cooperation is in
several areas which include among others the following: Education, Trade, ICT, Migration and in multilateral affairs.
Found in the Horn of Africa, Djibouti is strategically located near the world’s busiest shipping lanes, controlling access to the Red Sea and Indian Ocean.
In 2016, Djibouti was handed the land title documents for a plot near the Kigali Special Economic Zone.
Prior to that Rwanda was also offered a 20-hectare piece of land at the port of Djibouti in 2013, which Rwanda plans to develop and operate as a strategic base for its imports and exports.
