At least one people has been killed in the torrential rains while many houses and bridges were damaged in Rutsiro, a district in Western Rwanda, a senior local administrative official in the region confirmed Monday.
The victim was killed by floods and landslides triggered by the rains, Jean Pierre Mwenedata, the Executive Secretary of Mushonyi sector in Rutsiro district said.
The Rwanda Meteorology Agency in latest forecast “above-normal” rainfall countrywide during the rainy season from February to May.
The weather watchdog announced that the western, northern and southwestern regions are set to receive heavier rains compared to other regions, which might trigger infrastructure destruction among other disasters.
Rwanda experiences regularly disaster cases resulting from natural hazard including flooding, landslides, strong winds, heavy rains and storms.
