APA-Johannesburg (South Africa) South Africa’s governing African National Congress (ANC) has expelled its secretary general Ace Magashule for alleged misconduct and bringing the party into disrepute for a 2021 incident in which he purportedly suspended party leader President Cyril Ramaphosa.
ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri said in a statement on Monday that the party’s National Disciplinary Committee (NDC) made the decision after Magashule ignored a request by the committee to show cause within seven days on why he should not be expelled.
“Upon the lapse of seven days, the NDC had not received any representations to that effect,” Bhengu-Motsiri said.
Magashule’s troubles started when he was suspended in 2021 for refusing to abide by the ANC’s “step-aside” clause that requires party members facing criminal charges to temporarily step down until their court cases are finalised.
The suspension followed his arrest on allegations of corruption charges earlier that year.
Meanwhile, Magashule said he would hold a press conference next week to discuss his expulsion from the party, saying “it is well with my soul.”
