South Africa’s Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has recommended Mandisa Maya to be the country’s next chief justice, a development that will make her the first female to ever occupy the position.
Maya was the sole candidate when the JSC conducted interviews to replace incumbent Chief Justice Raymond Zondo in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
“Following the interview for Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa, the Judicial Service Commission has resolved to advise the President, that Deputy Chief Justice M M L Maya is suitable for appointment to the position of Chief Justice,” the JSC said in a statement.
It further announced that it would also recommend Supreme Court of Appeal judge and Electoral Court chairperson Dumisani Zondi as the right candidate for the position of deputy chief justice.
Zondo, who retires in August at the end of his 12-year term at the Constitutional Court, chaired the interviews.
