President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Somadoda Fikeni as chairperson of South Africa’s Public Service Commission (PSC), the presidency announced on Wednesday.
The president also appointed Zukiswa Mqolomba as his deputy at the commission, it added.
“President Ramaphosa wishes Prof Fikeni and Ms Mqolomba well in leading the commission in its critical mission of contributing to the development of an efficient, ethical and capable Public Service,” the presidency said in a statement.
Acting in the position since the end of January this year, Fikeni was a senior executive director within the public administration leadership and has a doctorate in comparative politics and public policy analysis, the presidency said.
“Fikeni has lectured public administration at several universities, worked as an academic at universities and research institutions, and has experience as a public servant,” the office said.
He also served as chairperson of “seven public and private entities in the last 16 years and was part of the team that designed the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation’s School of Diplomacy,” it said.
Mqolombo will also bring a wealth of experience and academic understanding of the public service to the PSC, the statement said.
“She holds two Masters degrees in Public Policy from the University of Cape Town as well as an MA in Poverty and Development from the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom,” the presidency said.
The PSC is an independent body empowered to exercise oversight over the public service in South Africa by investigating, monitoring, and evaluating its organisation and administration in the country.
