Criminal incidents of housebreaking, home robbery, hijacking and car theft in South Africa reached 1.3 million nationwide during the 2018/19 season, Statistician-General Risenga Maluleke said in Pretoria on Thursday.
Maluleke, who heads Statistics South Africa, said these survey figures were more or less the same as last year, with some households being hit more than once.
He said the survey found that only 48% of the criminal incidents were reported to the police, adding that house break-ins tended to peak around the months of June, November and December.
While he did not explain the reasons for this statistics in the cited three months, he said his report reflected the results of Statistics South Africa’s annual Governance, Public Safety and Justice Survey.
