South Africa’s only nuclear energy plant has not been affected by the weekend’s 6.2 magnitude earthquake whose epicentre was in the northern Antarctica, a local official confirmed on Monday.
Western Cape Provincial Environmental Affairs Minister Anton Bredell assured the nation that the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station was built to withstand seismic activity and remains unaffected by the tremors that reached it from the epicentre.
There had been fears that the power plant would be damaged following the earthquake that happened in the sea nearly 2,000 km south-east of South Africa in the ocean.
Officials from the nuclear power plant, built outside the city of Cape Town on the Atlantic Coast, had earlier assured locals that there was no need for them to evacuate from the surrounding area.
