The Senegalese government, through the Market Regulation Agency (ARM), has announced a temporary suspension of onion imports effective January 25, 2025. This decision aims to promote the sales of locally produced onions and support domestic farmers.
According to a circular issued by the ARM, the suspension is based on anticipated harvests expected to hit the market in February 2025. The agency believes that this measure will help regulate the onion market, particularly during upcoming religious holidays.
In 2023, Senegal’s annual onion demand was estimated at 380,000 tonnes, with domestic production reaching 400,000 tonnes. This surplus indicates the potential for the country to meet its onion needs through local production.
The suspension of imports is expected to provide a boost to local farmers and contribute to the growth of the domestic agricultural sector.
