Ghanaian singer Shatta Wale was arrested in Accra on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, as part of a United States investigation.
The arrest, according to Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Thursday, was over a 2019 Lamborghini Urus allegedly bought with proceeds from a $4 million US fraud case.
According to local media reports, hundreds of fans had gathered outside the EOCO office in Accra on Thursday, vowing to remain overnight until the singer was released.
“Until our king walks out, we won’t move – even if we sleep here,” one of the fans told AFP.
The investigation is linked to a wider US fraud probe involving Ghanaian national Nana Kwabena Amuah, who is currently serving a prison sentence in the United States, the EOCO said.
The anti-fraud agency disclosed that the Lamborghini, seized earlier this year, is subject to a US District Court order from the Eastern District of Kentucky authorising the United States government to take possession of the vehicle in Ghana as compensation.
The reports said that Shatta Wale arrived at the EOCO on Wednesday afternoon, awaiting his lawyer before questioning continued into the evening.
He was, however, granted bail of 10 million cedis (about $900,000), but he remained in custody pending the verification of his guarantors.
The EOCO explained that the singer has not produced documentation proving ownership of the car. But Shatta Wale reportedly told investigators he purchased the Lamborghini for $150,000 from the “street”, possibly through a WhatsApp contact named “Zak”, whose identity he could not provide and whose contact he said he discarded.
The agency said that it acted on the requests from the FBI and the US Department of Justice to track the vehicle and pursue leads locally.
Shatta Wale’s legal team has maintained that he bought the car in good faith and denied any knowledge of criminal links.
