APA-Pretoria (South Africa) South Africa has plans to evacuate some 77 citizens who are stuck in war-torn Sudan, Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation spokesperson Clayson Monyela said on Monday.
Monyela tweeted that the 77 South Africans were all in a WhatsApp group with South African embassy staff who were stranded in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum.
A vicious power struggle between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force has led to violence across the country since April 15.
An increasing number of foreign diplomats have been evacuated from the capital Khartoum but foreign civilians are finding it difficult to leave the country, Monyela said.
He conceded that the evacuation would be dangerous and risky in view of the intense fighting between the two groups.
“Without revealing security plans, there’s an option that is being implemented,” he said.
The fighting has plunged Khartoum and other areas into darkness, thereby affecting communication.
