The arrest of Burundian nationals comes after several hundreds of Rwandans have been detained or deported from Uganda while some others have been arrested and tortured.
According to the Rwandan Government, at least 106 Rwandan nationals are currently being held in Uganda with no access to lawyers and consular services.
It is such illegal dentitions and irregular deportations of Rwandan nationals that has prompted the government of Rwanda last week to issue a travel advisory warning Rwandans against travelling to the neighboring country.
Speaking to reporters earlier this week in Kigali, Rwandan Foreign Affairs minister, Richard Sezibera explained that Our (Rwanda) position has been, we do not want to interfere with Uganda’s internal
affairs.
The reaction by Rwandan official comes after the executive director of the Uganda Government Media Centre, Ofwono Opondo told a press conference earlier in Kampala, that there’s nobody from Rwanda being held by the Ugandan authorities for any reason.
However, another senior Ugandan official went on to admit that if there Rwandese nationals in some prisons somewhere it is because they allegedly broke some laws that govern this land (Uganda) and have cases to answer in court.
“We do not even challenge the right of Uganda to arrest people if they think they are criminals. That is not the issue. The issue is that if you arrest somebody, you take them through due process,” the Rwandan top diplomat told reporters in Kigali.
The senior Rwandan government official also explained that Rwanda’s interest on the subject does not in any way amount to interference in the internal issues of Uganda.
