The Rwandan Cycling Federation has confirmed that the 2025 Tour du Rwanda will proceed as planned from February 23rd to March 2nd, despite the escalating tensions in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The decision to continue with the event comes amid heightened regional tensions following the M23 rebel group’s recent advances in the DRC. The DRC government has accused Rwanda of supporting the M23, a claim that Kigali vehemently denies.
Rubavu, a key stage of the Tour du Rwanda, is located in western Rwanda, bordering Goma, a city in the DRC recently occupied by the M23. Despite the proximity to the conflict zone, the Rwandan Cycling Federation has assured the public that “life in Rubavu and throughout Rwanda is proceeding normally” and that security measures will be in place to ensure the safety of all participants.
The Tour du Rwanda is a prestigious cycling event that attracts international attention and contributes significantly to Rwanda’s tourism sector. The decision to proceed with the event demonstrates the country’s resilience and commitment to promoting sporting events despite the challenging regional context.
