Sweden’s migration and asylum policy minister, Ms. Maria Malmer Stenergardmet has held talks with Uganda’s Foreign Affairs minister Oryem Henry Okello over the problems of refugees in the East African nation.
According to a statement from the talks, their meeting on Thursday was described as a constructive dialogue regarding the humanitarian challenges faced by refugees based in Uganda and the need by the two countries to focus on aligning policies, sharing best practices, and promoting cooperation in that regard.
During the meeting, the ministers reaffirmed their commitment to upholding international obligations, protecting the rights of refugees and providing them with a safe and dignified resettlement experience.
The two also emphasized the importance of increase of civil society participation to address the ongoing refugee crisis and work towards sustainable solutions.
The ministers commited to regular communication and cooperation and to strengthen their partnership and advance the shared goals of promoting refugee protection.
Africa’s largest refugee camp with 1.6 million people is located in Uganda.
Most of these refugees had fled conflicts in neighouring Sudan, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
