Ramtane Lamamra, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy For Sudan has warned that the military conflict in the country cannot be won or lost by either belligerent force.
Lamamra said the resolution of the conflict must come from the diplomatic front.
There have been several failed attempts to end hostilities since the conflict between the Sudanese army and paramilitary group began in April 2023.
He recently travelled to Sudan, where he met head of the Sudanese military junta General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
The envoy also went to Ethiopia, where he talked to a delegation from the Rapid Support Forces in the capital, Addis Ababa.
Following his trip, Mr. Lamamra shared his hopes for an end to the conflict, and the role of the UN in bringing about peace in the country.
Forces of the regular Sudanese army loyal to Gen Burhan have been of battling fighters of the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo for control of the country.
Neither side has gained the upper hand militarily.
