Wildfires that have been burning out of control in Menengai forest 160km west of Nairobi since Sunday are threatening to destroy its vegetation, the Daily Nation reports on Monday.
The forest accommodates the Menengai Crater which as one of the world’s biggest craters is also a tourist attraction.
The fire has already consumed several hectares of vegetation at the forest, apparently, fuelled by strong winds on Sunday.
In a tweet Nakuru governor Lee Kinyanjui that firefighters have been dispatched to the scene of the fires in the Menengai Crater Forest in Bahati, Eburru Forest in Gilgil and Koibatek Forest in Rongai Sub-county.
He expressed concern that the wildfires could destroy the forest covers in the county.
The last fires in the forest in 2017 destroyed hundreds of trees.
