On 12 and 13 November, the ECOWAS Commission and African Union (AU) Election Observation Missions arrived in Senegal for the November 17 legislative elections.
The two missions have been operating jointly, with a mandate focused on observing the final days of the campaign, voting and counting.
Headed respectively by Francis Alex Tsegah, former Ghanaian ambassador to Spain, and Calixte Aristide Mbari, an African Union expert on democracy and constitutionalism, the missions bring together 104 short-term observers from 20 African member states.
They include representatives of electoral management bodies (EMBs), civil society organisations (CSOs), academics and election experts.
Their mission is independent and impartial, in line with international standards and Senegal’s legal framework.
In addition to assessing the electoral process, the observers will hold discussions with various stakeholders in the electoral process, including other international and civilian observation missions.
A preliminary statement will be issued on 19 November, followed by a more detailed final report for Senegalese stakeholders.
