APA – Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) – A convoy supplying food to Titao, Burkina Faso was ambushed near Tibou (Loroum) on 31 May, the army said in a statement.
Units of the Burkina Faso army escorting a convoy of food supplies for the people of Titao were ambushed by a group of terrorists, the army’s Chief of General Staff said on Thursday 1 June 2023.
The number of attackers was estimated at around one hundred, according to an army count.
But the soldiers of the 12th Commando Infantry Regiment (RIC), supported by those of the 2nd Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR), fought back, causing “heavy losses” in the ranks of the jihadists.
“At least 50 of them were neutralised”, the statement said.
However, two civilians who were part of the convoy lost their lives. Eight (08) other wounded were recorded and evacuated for treatment.
The Chief of Staff praised the fighting spirit and sacrifice of the men involved in the fight for the return of peace to our country.
The Burkinabe army is escorting numerous convoys to bring supplies to areas of Burkina Faso caught in a pincer movement by terrorists.
The Minister for Humanitarian Action, Nandy Somé, said that 25,494 tonnes of food had been delivered by air and land to people in several parts of the country.
