The former President of the Transition who has been living in exile in Togo since the September 30, 2022 coup d’état has written a letter to the current Head of State, the Burkinabe investigative newspaper Courrier Confidentiel revealed on Monday.
“I hope that you (….) will be able to facilitate my return to my family in the coming months,” Lieutenant-Colonel Paul Henri Damiba wrote to Captain Ibrahim Traore.
The former Head of State, who came to power by overthrowing President Roch Kabore, also made suggestions to Captain Traore concerning the fight against terrorism.
He also called on his ouster to channel popular mobilization around him to develop the country.
“The dream of seeing Burkina Faso get healthier and the dream of seeing the country start its real development are shared by several thousand of your fellow citizens. It will be up to you to identify them and set them on the path to stability and renaissance,” he said.
Having toppled Roch Kabore in January 2022, Damiba was overthrown eight months later by Captain Ibrahim Traore for the same reasons, notably insufficient results in the fight against jihadist groups.
Paul-Henri Damiba was granted exile in Lomé, Togo, thanks to mediation by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
