The Patriotic Movement for Safeguard and Restoration (MPSR) has adopted a new “fundamental act” that restores the constitution and ensures the continuity of the state “pending the establishment of a Transitional Charter.”
Suspended last Friday following the coup d’Etat by Captain Ibrahim Traore against Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, the Constitution of Burkina Faso has been reinstated. On Wednesday, October 5, Captain Azaria Sorgho read out on national television the adoption of a new fundamental act.
Pending the adoption of a transitional charter, the “fundamental act” establishes the power of the MPSR and justifies its actions.
According to Captain Sorgho, the MPSR is composed of “a president, a first vice-president, a second vice-president, a coordinator and two commissions.”
The “President of the MPSR assumes the functions of the Head of State and Supreme Chief of the Armed Forces,” according to the official document, read by Captain Sorgho.
Captain Ibrahim Traore assumed this role after overthrowing Lieutenant Colonel Damiba on Friday, September 30.
“The President of the MPSR appoints senior civil and military officials and public enterprises of a strategic nature… The President of the MPSR accredits ambassadors and extraordinary envoys to foreign states…,” Captain Azaria Sorgho explained.
