Casablanca stands out as the most influential Moroccan city according to the Global Cities Index 2024, which evaluates the world’s leading metropolises. The ranking is based on five key criteria: economic strength, human capital, quality of life, environmental integrity and effective governance.
Morocco’s economic capital is ranked 442nd out of the 1,000 cities analysed by Oxford Economics. Casablanca shines particularly in terms of human capital, ranking 287th, and environmental quality, where it ranks 225th.
However, it performed less well in terms of quality of life and governance, ranking 713th and 562nd respectively. Other Moroccan cities also feature in the index, including Rabat (504th), Tangiers (631st), Agadir (656th), Marrakech (670th), Fez (684th) and Meknes (727th).
Moroccan cities show considerable potential for improvement, particularly in terms of quality of life, where they all rank above 700th place. Rabat, the political capital, boasts a respectable economic score (438th) and an exceptional environment (156th), but suffers from governance that is deemed inadequate (562nd). Tangiers,
for its part, suffers from a fragile economy (727th) and limited human capital (727th), but benefits from a first-rate environment (130th).
