The Ivorian National Assembly has unanimously approved four bills related to coffee, employment policy, and occupational safety and health in mines.
These bills, presented by Foreign Affairs Minister Leon Kacou Adom, aim to strengthen the country’s economic and social development.
One of the key bills authorizes the President of the Republic to ratify the International Coffee Agreement 2022. This agreement, adopted in London in June 2022, emphasizes the importance of collaboration within the coffee value chain to ensure the sustainability and prosperity of the coffee sector. It also highlights the need for market transparency, price stability, and improved access to information for coffee farmers.
The National Assembly also approved a bill authorizing the ratification of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 122 on employment policy. This convention promotes full and productive employment and aims to raise living standards.
Additionally, the Assembly adopted a bill to ratify ILO Convention No. 176 on safety and health in mines, which focuses on improving working conditions and preventing accidents in the mining sector.
Minister Adom emphasized the significance of these bills in promoting decent work and contributing to the Ivorian economy. He highlighted that these conventions are essential legal instruments for upholding international labor standards and promoting human rights, including the right to work and fair working conditions.
The Minister also stressed the government’s commitment to achieving strong, balanced, and inclusive economic growth that optimizes job creation in key sectors like mining and coffee. He acknowledged the multifaceted challenges involved and the need for an integrated approach to employment policy that considers the well-being of Ivorian workers.
These legislative approvals demonstrate Côte d’Ivoire’s commitment to international cooperation, decent work, and sustainable economic development.
