The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Thursday, August 29, 2024, condemned what it described as “barbaric attacks” perpetrated by armed terrorist groups on Barsalogho, in the north-central region of Burkina Faso.
The terrorists attack targeted the town of Barsalogho on Saturday, August 24, 2024 and left dozens of civilians killed and scores of others wounded.
While the country is in the process of withdrawing from the regional body at the end of 2023, ECOWAS expressed its solidarity with the government and people of Burkina Faso “in their ongoing fight against terrorists.”
The sub-regional organisation reaffirmed its determination “to fight alongside the states of the sub-region to eradicate terrorism, particularly through the ongoing activation of the counter-terrorism force.”
The ECOWAS Commission called on its members to strengthen cooperation in intelligence sharing, border security and the implementation of the strategy to combat armed terrorist groups.
