APA-Rabat (Morocco) – Morocco’s position underlines the importance of a just and lasting political solution for the Middle East.
Morocco is expressing its support for the United States’ proposals for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip in Palestine.
“The Kingdom of Morocco, whose King Mohammed VI chairs the Al Quds Committee, stresses the importance of the proposals put forward by the President of the United States of America, Joe Biden, to promote a ceasefire in Gaza” indicates a statement from the foreign affairs ministry on Monday.
Morocco supports Mr Biden’s proposals for a lasting ceasefire in Gaza, humanitarian access, the protection of civilians, the return of displaced persons and the reconstruction of destroyed areas,” the ministry says.
“Morocco hopes that the various parties concerned will adhere to this initiative and commit themselves to implementing its various phases,” insists Rabat, which remains “convinced that a lasting peace in the Middle East must include an inescapable two-state solution: a Palestinian state based on the borders of June 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, living side by side with an Israeli state,” adds the ministry’s statement.
The American president has proposed a three-phase agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza. The first phase includes a total ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, with a significant increase in humanitarian aid.
The second phase provides for the release of all remaining hostages and the full withdrawal of Israeli forces, leading to a permanent cessation of hostilities if Hamas fulfils its commitments.
The third phase would focus on the large-scale reconstruction of Gaza after the destruction caused by the war.
