The President of the Commonwealth Games Association, Engineer Habu Ahmed Gumel, has commended the stellar performance of Team Nigeria, which won 8 medals at the just concluded Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) hosted by Trinidad and Tobago.

”The Games were commendable showcase of talent and sportsmanship,” Gumel said, adding that “these lads were simply ‘fantastic.”
In the same vein, the Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Ministry of Sports, Mr. Ismail Abubakar, commended the team on behalf of the Nigerian Government and particularly praised the athletics for winning all the medals.
According to the statement by the public relations officer of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Mr Tony Nezianya, the Games were held from August 4 to August 11 and the youths from the 69 commonwealth nations and territories gathered in the Port of Spain, the capital of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to showcase their incredible talents in sportsmanship in celebration of the CYG
Nezianya stated that Nigerian team won a total of 8 medals made up of 6 gold and 2 silver medals.
He added that one of the athletes, Destiny Agbo, etched her name into the history books by breaking the Games record in the para-Discus event with F42-44/61-64.
This feat, according to him, was even more remarkable as the event just made its debut in the Games, making Agbo’s result an instant record.
He stated that Samuel Uchenna Ogazi continued his outstanding performance by winning two gold medals in the 200 and 400 meters, while Faith Okwose, another young Nigerian athlete, displayed her speed and skill by claiming two gold medals in the 100 meters and the mixed doubles.
Justina Eyakpobeyan added to Nigeria’s success by winning two silver medals in the 100 meters and 200 meters, while the quartet of Faith, Okon, Samuel, and Justina combined their skills to achieve victory in the 4×100 mixed doubles.
“The overall winners of the Games were Australia, followed closely by England, Ireland, South Africa, and Nigeria,” the statement added.
