The Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF) over the weekend announced the interception of a vessel carrying a significant shipment of suspected narcotics.
It was part of a joint maritime operation which drew praise from President Patrick Herminie who reaffirmed the government’s “Seek and Destroy” strategy against drug trafficking.
According to the SDF, the operation involved the Coast Guard, Air Force, and Special Operations units. The Coast Guard patrol vessel Andromache was deployed to intercept the suspicious boat, which was boarded by a specialised team. An initial search uncovered several packages in the ship’s hold, consistent with those commonly used for transporting narcotics.
The authorities did not specify the type or quantity of drugs seized. The vessel and its six crew members have been detained and will be handed over to the competent authorities for a full investigation.
President Herminie, who also serves as Commander-in-Chief of the SDF, commended the forces for their “professionalism, vigilance, and tactical excellence” during the operation.
He emphasised that the operation demonstrates the effectiveness of the nationwide anti-drug strategy, reinforced by the government and based on the “Seek and Destroy” approach.
“The fight against drug trafficking remains a national priority,” the President said, warning that narcotics pose a threat to the moral and social fabric of society, and that the administration will not allow Seychelles’ territorial waters to be exploited for criminal activities.
He issued a stern warning to anyone involved in drug trafficking to cease their illegal activities immediately, vowing that offenders will face the full force of the law.
