During his official visit to Senegal, the head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to security in the Sahel, where it intends to play a decisive role in the fight against criminal networks and contribute to stability and economic prosperity.
The Sahel, a region facing multiple security challenges, remains a foreign policy priority for Spain.
During his visit to Senegal, Sánchez emphasised the importance of bilateral cooperation with the West African country to strengthen security in the region, while praising the leadership of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, in regional mediation.
“President Faye and I agreed that security is essential to improve the well-being of all,” said the Spanish leader during a joint press conference with President Faye. He reiterated his country’s willingness to work closely with the land of Teranga to address the region’s security challenges.
The security forces of the two countries have been working together for many years to combat mafias, human trafficking networks and organised crime.
This special relationship between Dakar and Madrid comes at a time when the stability of the Sahel is crucial to the security not only of West Africa, but also of Europe.
“This region is of key strategic importance for my country and for Europe in general. We therefore want to contribute to its stability and prosperity,” he noted.
Senegal’s active mediation is seen as a key factor in strengthening cooperation between Senegal and Spain.
According to Pedro Sánchez, this cooperation will further consolidate relations between the two nations and contribute to regional security.
